Wrestling gets recorded on a university campus:
Five years ago the new head wrestling coach at our school Rob Porter gave me a task. He wanted to record the wrestlers, make comments during their match, and then give them the recording the same night for them to review.

This presented several problems:

1. We need a universal delivery method.
2. We needed one single file as opposed many separate files that needed to be combined. With wrestling you have a lot of stop and starts and we did not want the recording to create a separate file every time the camera was stopped.
3. We needed to start a new recording immediately after the previous match started.
4. We needed to get the recordings to the boys by the end of the match.
5. Keep a library of all the matches.

Digital video cameras do not work because you create separate files for each stop or pause. We ended up recording directly onto DVD’s This worked for 1 and 2. Even then not always. Recording live onto DVD’s can be tricky at best.

In April of 2008 after 3 years of DVD recordings and nightmares I read an article on Engadget.com about a device called iRecord. I could not believe my eyes… some company figured out there was a need for exactly what we wanted. We could record onto a hard drive, or USB keychain or an iPod.

I called and they told me that if I used the remote, and put it on pause, only ONE file could be created. What did this mean? I could buy 14 USB keychains, record on them individually, create one single file for each match as a MPEG4 file. Basically I could do 1,2,3,4 and 5. We tried it, it worked, and our team went from being a lowly unknown wrestling team to the final eight in team championships. This year we added another iRecord and the following is our methods. This would be very useful for almost any sport, especially football.

This year we used two iRecords. One iRecord (iRecord A) records onto a USB Keychain. The second iRecord (iRecord B) records onto a Lacie Hard drive that is powered off the iRecord USB/bus. (Lacie Rugged)

1. Prior to the match starting we connect a video camera to RCA “Splitter” jacks that have one female end and two males. Each color gets its own splitter.
2. We then attach each male end of the splitter to the corresponding color on each iRecord.
3. When a wrestler takes to the mat his USB keychain is given placed in iRecord A
4. iRecord B has the Lacie Rugged plugged into it.
5. When the match starts, we hit Record on the remote and both iRecords receive the signal and start. One remote operates them both.
6. If there is a stoppage we hit pause on the iRecord (not the camera) and the file is kept intact as a single file (no file joining YEAH!)
7. After every match the keychain is given to the wrestler after he gets off the mat and a new one inserted.
8. The hard drive has a duplicate of every match

After the night is over and all the wrestlers have gone home, Coach Porter can now take his copy of each video from the Lacie and create his own library in iTunes (you can have multiple libraries in iTunes). During the year if we want to see a match it is no big deal. We call up the library and look up the match.

Very impressed with how easy iRecord is to use. Can I also say that your level of customer service is also very impressive, and welcome. It's one of those 'intangibles' that a lot of companies seem to forget, but as an end user there are few things more frustrating than being sold a device or piece of software and then finding you are just 'left to it.' Thanks.

I call it my "white box of magic". I don't know how it does it, but it blinks at me like it knows how happy it's making me. I have a large collection of records, cassette tapes and videos that I've wanted to make more convenient to listen to and to preserve for years. This is the first product that's fit the bill, one device to record any audio or video analog input into the currently most portable and versatile digital format. With excellent options and control, the iRecord makes it a joy to create "backup copies" of my media. Straight out of the box I was able to record The Beatles "Revolver" complete with accurate track breaks. I was also able to transfer my TV news interview from VHS to YouTube with no editing required! It truly is magic. Thank you.

The iRecord Company makes a very versatile and easy to use digital video recorder. In addition, their technical support is excellent. Soon after purchasing my iRecord I had a few questions and a technical issue I needed to get resolved. iRecord tech support answered my questions very quickly - even though it was over the Holiday Season. They also sent me the needed firmware upgrade & very simple directions to load it before it was released on their website. This resolved my problem. I highly recommend this product from a very responsive company that values their customers.

Easy to use, small, superb customer service. A bit expensive but a great product backed up by fine company.

iRecord is the best product I have ever seen for being able to convert almost anything with analog RCA plugs to the digital format of MP3 or MP4. I have two of these and have recorded over 800 videos and keep them on my outside hard drive to transfer on my IPod. My suggestion is to have no direct transfer to the iPod as it cannot be recovered if deleted. Using an 8GB memory stick placed in the convenient USB port will hold about 10 to 14 movies. After using it for the capture, it is only necessary to take the stick to your computer and rename the files which are automatically numbered sequentially in the order you record them. I use cable movies and capture them the same as Tivo might but all are then converted to MP4's and in a very good quality. A DVD is about 7 to 8 GB and the conversion is to about 500 to 600MB on average. I recommend this to everyone that has the requirement to transfer videos or music to their computer in an MP4 or MP3 format.

I use the iRecord 99% to "time shift" shows off the satellite, while I am away. It works flawlessly. The only negative :) is that I liked the video quality of your iRecord so much that I just purchased this week an 80GB iPod legacy to leave permanently attached to the iRecord and a 16 GB iPod touch to view the captured video on. This was an added expense I had not counted on! LOL. Good luck!!
